With the Tesco supermarket chain offering affordable engagement rings, could the approach to romance spell the end of our love affair with pricey sparklers?

When Marilyn Monroe sang her definitive ode to diamonds in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, she listed off the names of the grand diamond stores with gusto. "Tiffany's! Cartier! Black Starr! Frost Gorham! Talk to me Harry Winston," she cooed.

Strangely, she didn't at any point namecheck Tesco. But while a rock from Tesco may not rank up there with one from Harry Winston, the supermarket chain is now supplying affordable engagement rings to the British public.
