The Gemmological Institute of India (GII) launched its National Research Centre for research and related studies on diamonds and gemstones.
Opening the center in Mumbai, October 12, the government of India's commerce secretary S.N. Menon said there is a vital need for such an institution to retain the customer confidence and credibility in the world markets as gem and jewelry exports alone constitute 17 percent of the country's total exports. India is eyeing $18 billion worth of exports in this sector in the current fiscal year, he said.
