The most popular fancy colored diamonds are:
Yellow Diamonds
Some people believe that yellow means poor quality as far as diamonds are concerned, and that the best diamonds are completely colorless. Fancy yellow diamonds come in a broad range of shades ranging from light yellow (but not that light as a Z graded colorless diamond) to a rich canary color. There are also shades of intense lemon, orange or deep-orange (or “marmalade”). Popular names for different mixtures of yellow are amber, canary, and champagne.
Formal GIA terms used to describe natural yellow diamonds: Light Fancy Yellow, Fancy Yellow, Fancy Intense Yellow, and Fancy Vivid Yellow.
The Tiffany Yellow is one of the largest yellow diamonds in existence. Its shade is a beautiful orange-yellow.
Blue Diamonds
A naturally blue diamond contains boron, hence is a p-type semiconductor. Increase in conductivity is a reliable way of differentiating the naturally color blue diamond from an irradiated one.
The Hope Diamond is the most famous blue diamond, with a reputation for bringing bad luck to its owner. It is a 45.52 carat steel blue and was found in India back in remote times. As a rough crystal it weighed 112 carats. A blue diamond engagement ring might be the traditional “something blue” for the bride.
Green Diamonds
They raise a problem in treatment detection. There is no reliable way of determining whether the color has been produced naturally or by irradiation. Green color might be: a light tinge rather like the color of water in a swimming pool; a dark green shade; a yellowish-green shade characterized by a degree if lubricity.
The famous 41 carats Dresden Green gets its name from the capital of Saxony where it has been on display for more than 200 years.
Pink, Red and Purple
These diamonds are closely related and are the most expensive for a diamond (excluding the one-of-the-kind diamonds).
The Steinmetz Pink is the largest Fancy Vivid Pink diamond known in the world. Pink diamonds are extremely rare and usually found in much, much smaller sizes.
The Steinmetz Pink weighs 59.60 carats and has been graded as Internally Flawless, an extremely rare and coveted clarity grade.
The Moussaieff Red is a trilliant cut. It was cut in the mid-1990, and it is, as GIA states the largest Fancy Red, natural color diamond that we have graded as of the date the report was issued
.
If you can afford it, a pink diamond engagement ring is a dazzling, won't-take-no-for-an-answer choice — recommended for a “connoisseur” recipient.
Black Diamonds
Black diamond is also one of the most popular fancy colored diamonds. Blackness is given by criss-crossing fissures in the structure of the diamonds, with black deposits (mostly sulfides) on them so that they emerge opaque. Translucent or semitransparent Black Stones are rare. Black is dull in tone, yet, there are some variations known as:
- charcoal — pale black
- gun metal — bright black
- ink — dull black, jet, midnight, onyx and pitch, all having weak saturation
The Black Orloff from India and Black Star of Africa are famous blacks.
Black diamond engagement rings are an option, such a choice adds a touch of class and distinction to the wearer.
