The cushion cut is a late 19th and early 20th style antique type shape.

The cushion cut diamond was one of the most popular diamonds ever. Starting from 1830, for more than 70 years diamonds were cut this way.

The cushion cut or “pillow cut” has a rectangular to square shape (the degree of rectangularity may vary), rounded corners and larger facets to increase their brilliance under candlelight. There is also an open culet (the bottom of the diamond) giving the diamond depth.

The larger facets also highlight the diamond's clarity, so extra-attention should be paid when you choose the clarity grade, checking the clarity characteristics on the diamond certificate.

Cushion cuts are a little less brilliant than modern round brilliant diamonds, but are more dispersive (the separation of white light into spectral colors). Nevertheless, a cushion cut diamond engagement ring is a valuable choice, as today's cushion cuts have better symmetry, proportions and polish.
