A Brilliant cut diamond engagement ring is a “classic”.
The Round Brilliant is the most popular and common style of cutting both diamonds and colored stones. Over 75% of the diamonds sold today are Round Brilliant.
It is the most brilliant of all the cuts.
There are 58 facets in a Round Brilliant Cut Diamond including the culet. On the Crown or upper part of the Diamond, these consist of:
- 1 table facet
- 8 bezel facets
- 8 star facets
- 16 upper girdle facets for a total of 33
On the pavilion, or bottom part of the Diamond, there are:
- 16 lower girdle facets
- 8 pavilion main facets
- 1 culet
To obtain the maximum fire and brilliance in a diamond — especially when it comes to Round Brilliant Cut, performing the ideal cut is a must (calibration within proportions calculated through a precise mathematical formula which was perfected back in 1919).
Rounds are the most expensive cuts, and with good reason: Ideal Cuts are rare on the market because achieving such a cut usually entails losing more weight from the rough (unpolished) diamond than regular proportions used for any fancy shape.

The recommended proportions for Brilliant cuts would be:
- depth of 60-63%
- table of 53-59%.
Variations of the Round Brilliant include such fancy shapes as the Marquise, Half Moon, Pear shape, Radiant, Princess and many others.
De Young Red
This is a notorious round brilliant cut diamond. It is a red diamond weighing 5.03 carats.
A particularity of its cut is that the main kite-shaped facets on the crown are horizontally divided in two, giving the stone slightly more brilliance than a standard round brilliant has.
The De Young Red can be seen in the Smithsonian Museum in Washington D.C.
